Understanding Breast Enlargement and Reduction

Breast enlargement is a surgical procedure that enlarges the breast through implantation of prosthesis. This prosthesis expands the breast area to give an increased cup size, a better contour, and a better cleavage.

Breast reduction, on the other hand, is a surgery for patients seeking relief from physical symptoms caused by the excessive weight of large breasts, a condition that is medically known as breast hypertrophy. Breast hypertrophy typically occurs in both breasts and happens at puberty or soon afterwards. Breast reduction can usually solve these problems as well as improve and reshape your breasts. Following breast reduction, your breasts will be more proportional to the rest of your body, and clothes will fit you better.

Understanding the Surgery

During a Breast Augmentation procedure, incisions are usually made around the nipple’s areola, in the crease under the breast, so that scars are inconspicuous. The implant (either silicone or saline) is inserted into a pocket under the chest muscle or directly behind breast tissue. If Breast Lift Surgery is included, then the breast tissue is lifted and reshaped for better firmness. Enlarged areolas may be reduced. The incisions are then closed with dissolvable stitches.
You will notice the results of your Breast Augmentation immediately, and after about a fortnight, once swelling has subsided, you will see the final shape of your new breasts.

What to Expect After the Surgery

As far as pain is concerned, if the implant was placed above the muscle there is likely to be a mild to moderate level of discomfort and if it was placed below the muscle, there will be moderate to severe pain. A patient of breast augmentation surgery will be prescribed anywhere from one to two weeks’ worth of medication, dependent on how much pain the person is in.

Swelling is likely to occur both above as well as below the muscle. Above the muscle the swelling will be present anywhere from four days to two weeks while below the muscle it will take two to twelve weeks to go away. Bruising is also very likely to result from having breast implants and this could last up to a period of two weeks. Be aware that some patients do not experience any bruising whatsoever whereas others do.
It will take about a month to see the final results of your breast augmentation if it took place above the muscle and about four months if it was done below the muscle. After the surgery is over your breasts will feel unusual as they will be very firm, swollen and will feel higher up on your body then they did before. In some cases it can take upwards of a year’s time for the implants to settle into the position that they will remain in for the duration.
