What is Facelift Surgery? Who Can Undergo the Surgery?

Although facelift, also known as rhytidectomy, is perceived as a medical procedure performed due to aesthetic concerns, it sometimes appears as a medical necessity. We cannot mention that facelift operations, which are commonly performed with aesthetic concerns, are preferred by women nowadays. Facelift procedures, which are very popular among men of our age, are mostly preferred to recover skin loosening and sagging on the face after a certain age.

Facelift surgery allows you to give the face a younger appearance by improving the aesthetics of the whole face without changing its appearance. Facelift surgery is a method in which wrinkles and sagging on the face are removed by the stretching and hanging method.

Step by Step Guide to Facelift Surgery and Recovery

Before the Surgery

When you have a problem with aging and sagging around your face, and are considering facelift surgery, first discuss with yourself what you want and why you want it, and then consult a plastic surgeon. Tell your doctor one by one about your wishes and expectations and discuss them with your doctor. If you smoke, you must quit smoking at least 10 days before the surgery. Tell your doctor about your sunbathing and skincare habits, and do not forget to ask what you need to do after the surgery to give a more permanent result. If necessary, discuss the matter with your doctor several times.

During the Surgery

The surgery is performed in hospital conditions, under the supervision of an anesthesiologist, in the operating room. Surgery is usually done under general anesthesia as well as under local anesthesia. This type of surgery can take 3-10 hours, depending on the technique and what will be done. Throughout the surgery, soft tissue, including facial muscles that cause sagging on the face, is suspended with special stitches. The excess part of the skin is removed. Thus, skin abundances in the temple, cheek, and chin areas are eliminated. Laugh lines at the rim are reduced in depth. It is possible to go home on the same day after the operation, but it is generally healthier to stay in the hospital for 1 night. Additional procedures (nose, eyelid surgery, etc.) can be performed in the same session. Facelift surgery is not scarless. However, these traces are not apparent because they are hidden. The scars are hidden in the scalp and behind the ear. There can be scars remain, however, these scars on the face are mostly inconspicuous and can be hidden.

After the Surgery

The postoperative period is usually comfortable. There may be general and temporary swelling and bruising, numbness, and tightness around the face. Since the facial nerves may be slightly affected by anesthesia during the operation, there may be slight asymmetries around the face. These disappear immediately within 3-5 days. A headwrap and cold pads are applied to the cheeks, leaving eyes, nose, and mouth open. Silicone pipes which are called drains can be placed to prevent blood accumulation in the tissue. Your bandage will be completely removed after 2-3 days. Your nurses will make a general inspection and change the dressing. You can wash your hair during this period. If the stitches are not dissolvable, they are removed 5-7 days after the surgery. You can go back to your life after 2 weeks. At the end of 3 months, 80% of the swelling decreases, and 6 months later, the swelling decreases from 85% to 90%. At the end of 1 year, you can see the final result, but it should not be forgotten that the healing process works at different speeds for each patient.
